Languages at Bickershaw Church of England Primary School

At Bickershaw Church of England Primary school, our intent for Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) is to provide a rich and inspiring curriculum that enables all pupils to develop a deep understanding and appreciation of different languages and cultures. The MFL curriculum we follow aims to foster a lifelong love for languages, instilling confidence and competence in communication, and preparing pupils to be global citizens in an increasingly interconnected world.  Learning a foreign language is a necessary part of being a member of a multi-cultural society and provides an opening to other cultures. A highquality languages education should foster children's curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable  children to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing.  Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages and further widen pupils’ understanding  of the cultural and linguistic diversity of the world that they live in.

It is our ambition that all children will develop an understanding of speaking, listening, reading and writing in a foreign language, through the effective teaching and learning of the vocabulary, phonics and grammar. We aim to foster a love of communication and an appreciation for culture. To provide high quality teaching and to regularly assess children, to ensure that the loss of learning over the past couple of years is addressed and gaps are filled.

The principal aims of MFL are to ensure that all pupils:

• develop an interest in learning to speak a language other than English.

• improve the confidence of pupils to use the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in another language.

• make children aware of the importance and relevance of language learning and how skills acquired through learning a new language are transferrable to other aspects of life.

• motivate language learning using strategies that are enjoyable and accessible to all.

• stimulate and encourage children’s curiosity about language and creativity in experimenting with it.
